Laureate 2006

August A. Busch III was born on June 16, 1937. He is the eldest son of August Busch Jr. and Elizabeth Overton-Busch. Like his father, as a youth he spent time at the family’s Grant’s Farm, where he enjoyed the outdoors and worked at the brewery during his summers. August received his brewmaster certificate from the Siebel Institute of Technology, a brewing school in Chicago. He began his career at Anheuser-Busch in 1957. Following the Busch family tradition of learning the business from the bottom up, August’s first job was cleaning and polishing copper brew kettles and mopping floors. He worked in many other departments before succeeding his father as the brewery’s President in 1974 and as CEO in 1975. August is the fourth generation and fifth member of the Busch family to have served as President of Anheuser-Busch. His business vision – both in the United States and internationally – has consistently delivered earnings growth to shareholders. Under his leadership, the company has been recognized for its environmental stewardship and as a generous corporate citizen. He has aggressively campaigned against the abuse of alcohol, including underage drinking and drunk driving. August is credited with bringing modern, disciplined business strategies to the U.S. beer industry and is known as a fearless competitor. But perhaps no trait is more closely identified with August Busch III than his relentless dedication to quality. Throughout his executive career, he has used his skills as an expert brewmaster to personally taste the beer his breweries produce. And his dedication to quality does not end with the product – it is the foundation for the way the company maintains its facilities, its relationships and its business standards.
