Laureate 0200

Born to John Francis Queeny and Olga Mendez Monsanto in 1897, Edgar Monsanto Queeny was the elder of two children. In 1919, after attending Cornell University and serving in the U.S. Navy, Edgar Queeny joined the company that his father founded, Monsanto. Over the following years, Queeny held various roles of increasing importance at Monsanto. When he eventually stepped down from the company chairmanship in 1960, Monsanto’s assets were 100 times greater than they had been when he assumed the company presidency 32 years before. In addition to the many titles he held at Monsanto, Queeny was also an author, scientist-inventor, naturalist, sportsman, photographer, economist and a leader in civic, educational and cultural affairs. Beyond his positions in Monsanto and its subsidiary and associate companies, he was a director of the St. Louis Symphony Society, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the United Fund of Greater St.Louis, the American-Korean Foundation, the Health Information Foundation, the Herbert Hoover Foundation and the World Rehabilitation Fund. He was a member of the Business Advisory Council for the U.S. Department of Commerce and a member and former vice chairman of the board of Civic Progress, Inc. of St. Louis. He also was a member of the executive committee of The Round Table, another St. Louis civicprogress group. Perhaps one of Queeny’s most visible contributions to the St. Louis area is St. Louis County’s Queeny Park. The park is named after the Queenys, because Ethel Queeny, Edgar’s wife, donated the land and property to the county.
