Mallinckrodt, Inc.

Laureate 2006

As an only child, Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. was significantly influenced by the adults in his life, especially his father, Edward Mallinckrodt, Sr., the co-founder of Mallinckrodt, Inc. But it wouldn’t be until his adulthood that Edward Jr. would follow in his father’s footsteps and find a passion for science: as a youngster, Edward Jr., who loved to paint, had an affinity for the arts. Edward Jr. studied chemistry at Harvard and worked at Mallinckrodt for 24 years before he became Chairman, succeeding his father. Edward Jr. demonstrated strong leadership, transforming Mallinckrodt from a small chemical producer to a major manufacturer of fine chemicals for industry medicine. He played an active role in the scientific advancement of the company, pushing forward 16 patents relating to the purification, packaging and preservation of ether. Edward Jr. was also recognized for his philanthropic efforts. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, while many were jobless, he refused to lay off his employees and instead created jobs at the St. Louis plant so workers could be paid. He donated money to several educational institutions and made large charitable contributions in support of his religion. In his later years, Edward Jr. shifted his focus toward family and personal interests. While he enjoyed stargazing with his grandchildren and reinvigorated his passion for painting, he still maintained focus on Mallinckrodt and did not retire until 1965, one year before his death. Today, thanks to the commitment of Edward Jr. and to the dedicated employees who followed his leadership, Mallinckrodt has grown to be a leading global provider of specialty healthcare products in the areas of diagnostic imaging, respiratory care and pain relief, with products that contribute to patient care in every type of healthcare setting.
