I.E. Millstone was born January 6, 1907 on Adelaide Avenue in North St. Louis, the son of Louis and Mary Millstone. When he wasn’t attending classes at Clark School, young I.E. spent most of his time playing outside with his friends. The winters would be for sledding and ice skating and the summers for swimming and fishing. An imaginative boy, I.E. and his friends used to make scooters out of pieces of lumber and old roller skates. As a Boy Scout, I.E.’s first job was as an usher on opening night at the MUNY in 1917. I.E.’s father taught him early on the true value of money. By the time he was 15, I.E. had saved more money than any of his friends. Most of his money was earned from odd jobs like checking hats and coats at United Hebrew. Back then all the men wore hats in the summer and winter, and they always checked them. In the winter they would check their canes and coats, and for each one I.E. was tipped a nickel or dime. I.E. went to Washington University at the age of 16 to study engineering. He paid for his education by working as a lifeguard in the summers. I.E. graduated in 1927 and worked for Mississippi Valley Structural Steel Company and then the City of St. Louis. I.E. had become very proficient with a new technology – reinforced concrete construction. After the stock market crash of 1929, I.E. started a small construction company in partnership with his wife. Millstone Construction Co. prospered completing housing projects in Florida, Alabama and other states, as well as St. Louis. After World War II the company expanded into major paving projects and airports. In the 1960’s the company completed many building projects including Busch Stadium and Mercantile Tower.
