Laureate 2006

Robert P. Stupp was taught early in his life by his father that a good work ethic, honesty and fairness were vital to success in life and the business world. As a boy, Bob worked most summers, spring and Christmas vacation. He earned 25 cents per hour cutting grass and performing yard work, and at age 14, earned 42 cents per hour working in the family business fabricating steel for buildings and bridges. Bob was learning to carry the tradition of excellence that has been a part of the Stupp organization since the company was founded in 1856. Not one to brag about his mediocre performance in school work, Bob was more interested in outside activities, scouts, sports, etc. Many years later though, he wished he had applied himself more to the education offered in grammar school. Bob did, however, develop a solid base in reading, writing and arithmetic and went on to college where he received a degree in Civil Engineering. Through Bob’s leadership and his commitment to excellence, Stupp Bros. and its family of companies have provided bridges, high rise buildings, sports facilities, and a variety of high quality products to customers throughout the world. The Stupp companies now encompass almost 1,000 employees. The years of progression find him today in the roll of chairman of the holding company of Stupp Bros. Inc. – the oldest steel fabricator in America. From his early years through today, Bob’s Episcopal Church has been one of the mainstays in his life along with his wife, three children, and five grandchildren. Bob also continues to be extremely active in the St. Louis community as a member or leader of a multitude of civic organizations.
